Ginger Nation wins “#1 Fringe Hit” @ Atlantic Fringe Festival

WP_Atlantic_Fringe_RP_15ATLANTIC FRINGE ROUND-UP!

Well #TeamGinger is back from the east coast after twelve crazy shows at the 25th Atlantic Fringe Festival, and we are completely exhausted but incredibly thankful to the Haligonians who joined the Ginger Nation! We cannot thank Halifax enough for an incredible showing at the festival.

Shawn kicked it off with media hits on CTV Atlantic (Morning Live & Section 6 with Ana Almeida), CBC Radio and 3 Penny Podcast. All of these hits are online, but here is the conversation with Daniel Gervais and Christine Daniels for the 3 Penny Podcast (please note this was a 10am conversation, so Shawn sounds like Kathleen Turner).

THE REVIEWS WERE red hot and Shawn was branded a “human vitamin pill”…

“Witty and ribald, Hitchins also throws a few curveballs as he contemplates the notion of becoming a parent, even tangentially, and learning to grow up when he least expected it.”
CHRONICLE HERALD

“a beautifully polished comedy of wit and silliness, but it’s also incredibly uplifting. In a world where the news is often about violence, it’s wonderful to remember that people also have the capacity to help each other bring children into the world, surrounded in love, optimism and laughter.”
THE WAY I SEE IT

“a polished entertainer who excels in masturbatory humor (in the best sense) but is also movingly vulnerable as he talks about the isolation of growing up different.”
THE COAST, PATRICIA DENYKO

“Everyone and anyone will find something in it to enjoy, but queer viewers may find a particular resonance in his honest examination of what it means for a young gay man to become a biological father, extending not just the Ginger Nation, but the parameters and possibilities of the human family itself.”
THE COAST, HUGO DANN

A BOX OFFICE HIT…

In the end Ginger Nation was awarded the accolade of “#1 Fringe Hit” and it was a surprise to #TeamGinger when the Chronicle Herald ran this headline the following day:

“Shawn Hitchins scores top hit at Fringe Festival with Ginger Nation”

So the Red, Orange & Pale tour continues with a brief stop at the inaugural Guelph Fringe Festival, before heading across the border for Shawn’s Off-Broadway debut at The Duplex. Stay tuned!

SPECIAL THANKS TO…

Thom Fitzgerald, Kevin Kindred, Lee-Anne Poole and the volunteers of the Atlantic Fringe Festival; Shawn’s hosts Amanda Hines & Nancy from Cape Breton; and everyone who shared their personal stories after the show. Much appreciated.
